MINI GT Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight

Oversell – MINI GT Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight

In 2015, a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight was sold for $962,500 at the Pebble Beach auction.

MINI GT Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight

This was one of the 200 Carrera RS M471 Lightweight models, factory-restored in 1995 and meticulously maintained since. It was equipped with a 2.6-liter Type 911/83 flat-six engine producing 210hp at 6,300rpm, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. It had McPherson struts in the front and a rear torsion bar suspension. The 1973 RS was Porsche’s attempt to introduce a small-displacement race car to replace the 5.0-liter 917, in order to meet homologation rules for the 2.8L RSR to compete in the Group 5 Special Grand Touring class. In addition to the sportier M471, there was also the “civilian” M472 version. After its debut at the 1972 Paris Auto Show, the initial 500-unit production allocation was sold out within a week, prompting Porsche to build another 500 units. Ultimately, 1,080 Carrera 2.7 RSs were produced, with the vast majority being the M472 model.

From the MINI GT packaging, we can’t tell if this Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight is the #9113601193 chassis car auctioned at Pebble Beach. However, the paint scheme is identical, with a white body, red “Carrera” lettering, duck tail spoiler, and red striping. The “fiberglass” rear engine lid bears the “2.7” designation. Additionally, all the front, fog, and taillights use separate plastic components, and the wheels are the off-road style. Notably, due to the engine lid having an intentional gap, I initially thought it could open, resulting in the entire assembly being unintentionally disassembled and reassembled.
