Hong Kong Nostalgia in Cement – “opaCity” by Mososisi Studio
In this era of rapid change, Hong Kong’s urban landscape is transforming daily. As skyscrapers rise, old buildings gradually disappear. However, a group of young people has decided to preserve Hong Kong’s architectural memories in a series of intricate cement models. They are Mososisi Studio, and their work is the nostalgia-filled “opaCity” series with HK CORNER HOUSES.
Origins: Preserving a Vanishing Hong Kong
“As born and raised Hong Kongers, we see buildings with unique characteristics and historical significance every day. But we also see them gradually disappearing due to development. We hope to preserve this sentiment in a tangible form through our method,” explains Andrew from Mososisi Studio, describing their creative motivation.
This seemingly simple idea crystallizes their deep affection for Hong Kong. Beneath its glamorous surface, each building in Hong Kong tells a unique story of the city. Mososisi Studio aims to eternally preserve these disappearing stories through their work.
Cement: Warmth in Hardness
Choosing cement as their creative material was a well-considered decision by Mososisi Studio. “Buildings and cement are inseparable. It’s natural for us to use this material with texture and warmth,” they explain.
However, the seemingly sturdy cement presents numerous challenges when crafting miniature models. “Cement is a hard yet fragile material. We encounter many issues in the process, such as how to present extremely delicate details, and how to balance the original appearance of buildings with the model’s presentation during 3D modeling.” These technical challenges became their motivation for continuous self-improvement.
From Landmarks to Street Corners: A Microcosm of Hong Kong Architecture
The “opaCity” series covers Hong Kong buildings from various periods and styles. From famous landmarks to corner shops, each model is a microcosm of Hong Kong’s urban memory.
When selecting subjects, Mososisi Studio prefers buildings with historical significance. “Historical buildings are much more diverse compared to today’s skyscrapers. Modern buildings tend to be more uniform, with less rich details in proportion.” This choice makes their work not just simple models, but tangible witnesses to Hong Kong’s architectural history.
Tong Lau Series: Searching for Shared Memories
Among their many works, the “Tong Lau Series” stands out. This series is a collaboration between Mososisi Studio and HK CORNER HOUSES. “Tong Lau represents Hong Kong’s architecture across many eras, and many still stand today. Their stories continue, which might be why they resonate with Hong Kongers.”
Tong Lau are not just buildings; they are places that carry countless life memories of Hong Kong people. Through this series, Mososisi Studio successfully evoked nostalgia for old Hong Kong, striking a chord with many.
From Testing the Waters to Growth: The Creative Journey
Developing the “opaCity” project wasn’t always smooth sailing. In 2022, they launched a Kickstarter campaign. “Crowdfunding was more like testing the waters, mainly to see if there was market interest in our concept products.” This experience made them realize that to gain more attention, they needed to develop the project into a series.
From the initial landmark series to the Tong Lau series, and recently the public housing estate series, Mososisi Studio’s works continue to innovate. “The biggest change is in the intricacy and complexity of our works. Our techniques have improved significantly. The recognition of our works has given us more confidence to develop new series.”
Beyond Commodities: Practicing Cultural Preservation
For Mososisi Studio, “One City, Unchanged” is not just a commercial project, but their way of participating in Hong Kong’s cultural preservation. “In Hong Kong, a city driven by money, cultural preservation is often led by commercial interests due to land issues. Many Hong Kongers don’t value it much, often asking, ‘Does it put food on the table?’ This often makes people forget the importance of culture, art, aesthetics, and such domains.”
Faced with this reality, they choose to persist in their own way. “Mososisi Studio will continue to try to find interesting and fun elements in Hong Kong culture for our creations, adhering to our principle of ‘doing trivial things seriously’.”
Future: Continuing Hong Kong’s Story
Looking ahead, Mososisi Studio has more plans. Besides developing new architectural series, they are also preparing workshops to let more people understand their production process. Meanwhile, they are seeking more cross-discipline collaboration opportunities, hoping to spark more creative ideas.
The story of “One City, Unchanged” continues, just as Hong Kong seeks balance between change and constancy. Through these small cement models, Mososisi Studio not only preserves architectural forms but also retains the collective memories of Hong Kong people.
In this rapidly changing era, “opaCity” reminds people that some things are worth slowing down to appreciate. It might be a building, a street, or a corner in one’s memory. These seemingly trivial “small matters” constitute people’s deep emotions for this city.
Mososisi Studio, in their own way, solidifies Hong Kong’s past, present, and even future in these exquisite cement models. Each model is a miniature Hong Kong, carrying countless stories and memories. While developing rapidly, it’s also important to cherish the vanishing urban memories. Perhaps, as the name “One City, Unchanged” implies, in this ever-changing city, emotions and memories are what truly remain constant. Mososisi Studio’s works are the concrete manifestation of these sentiments.
In Hong Kong, this vibrant city, the “opaCity” series acts like frozen points in time, allowing people to pause in their busy lives and re-examine their relationship with the city. The charm of the city lies not only in its modernity and prosperity but also in those corners and alleys that carry shared memories.
Mososisi Studio’s efforts are not just a form of creation, but also a way of inheriting and promoting Hong Kong culture. Their motto: “Do trivial things seriously.” Perhaps it’s these seemingly insignificant small matters that best reflect a city’s soul. And “opaCity” is the embodiment of this soul.
