Souvenir – KATO EF58 150 Kyoto Railway Museum Exhibition Vehicle

Despite visiting the Kyoto Railway Museum, Popondetta Aeon Mall KYOTO store near Kyoto Station, and Super Kids Land in Nipponbashi, Osaka, I didn’t buy the EF58 150 model there. However, upon returning to Hong Kong, I couldn’t resist purchasing the KATO 3049-9 EF58 150 Kyoto Railway Museum Exhibition Vehicle. After much deliberation, I ultimately brought it home.

KATO 3049-9 EF58 150

The EF58 150 is an electric locomotive from the era of Japanese National Railways (JNR). Manufactured in 1958 by the Toshiba Fuchu factory, it primarily hauled express trains on the Tokaido Line and Sanyo Main Line, boasting a long operational history. The EF58 150 was retired in 1986 but was revived the following year, repainted in brown, and continued to haul special trains until it was retired again in 2011 and subsequently preserved at the Kyoto Railway Museum. Upon its placement in the museum, its body color was changed from brown to blue.

The EF58 150 model is designed to recreate the classic JNR locomotive from the Showa era. The design team based the model on operational data from the Miyahara Locomotive Depot and referenced the real locomotive’s blue paint and intricate details. The EF58 150 Kyoto Railway Museum Exhibition Vehicle excels in exterior design fidelity, featuring a glossy paint finish and meticulously reproducing the locomotive’s nose ridge and the low-mounted headmark stanchion. Inside the carriage, the model simulates the actual locomotive’s control panel and seats, incorporating movable internal structures to enhance realism. Additionally, the model is equipped with a highly accurate PS15 pantograph (power collection device) and signal devices.

Compared to the EF58 150, the EF66 is more to my liking. However, the EF66 is not a special edition of the Kyoto Railway Museum Exhibition Vehicle, and its packaging box is not specially marked with the name of Kyoto Railway Museum Exhibition Vehicle. Fortunately, it is not limited to the museum, allowing overseas buyers to easily purchase it, effectively saving luggage weight.
