Gen 2 or Gen 3? — Xcartoys FAW Jiefang CA1121J Military Truck
Whether it’s the military Jiefang CA1121J or its civilian counterpart, the CA151, Xcartoys has managed to turn one base vehicle into two entirely different products through clever accessorising and figurine pairings — and both have found an eager audience.

The generational label depends on which family tree you’re looking at. Within FAW’s own Jiefang brand lineage, the CA1121J and its civilian sibling the CA151 belong to the third-generation product platform, designated J3. In the PLA’s military-vehicle genealogy, however, the picture is different: starting from the CA141, FAW developed a suite of “second-generation military trucks” that included the five-tonne CA1121J and the ten-tonne CA1171J. It was not until 2006 that FAW launched its “third-generation military off-road vehicle” pre-research programme, which ultimately produced the MV3 — also known as the “Jiefang Shenghu” — the PLA’s true third-generation tactical transport truck. So the “Gen.3” on the Xcartoys packaging refers to the Jiefang brand generation, not the military one.
The CA1121J — colloquially known in Chinese as the “flat-head diesel” — entered PLA service in the mid-1990s as a mainstay of the second-generation medium-duty logistics fleet. Its appeal lies in the cab it borrowed from Mitsubishi Fuso’s Fighter-series FM-width cabin: the cab-over-engine layout keeps the front overhang short, making the truck noticeably more agile around barracks and narrow roads; the wider cab, generous glass area, one-piece windscreen and triple wipers all translate directly into better efficiency on long hauls and in foul weather. A cab-tilt mechanism of roughly 44 degrees gives mechanics fast access to the engine bay — exactly the kind of “keep it rolling” thinking that defines a good logistics vehicle.
On the durability and load-bearing front, the CA1121J’s ladder-frame chassis paired with leaf-spring suspension front and rear gives it a ruggedness reminiscent of European military trucks — though its technology actually traces back to Mitsubishi rather than any European manufacturer. Braking is handled by a dual-circuit independent air-drum system supplemented by an exhaust brake, providing the safety margins that heavy-load transport demands. Early-production vehicles were fitted with a CA6110-1B naturally aspirated diesel producing 160 hp; later improved models received the CA6110/125Z1A2 turbocharged inline-six, lifting output to around 170 hp (125 kW) with peak torque of 549 N·m, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox — a powertrain valued above all for being easy to service, easy to repair, and blessed with a generous parts supply. It is worth noting that the CA1121J uses a 4×2 rear-wheel-drive layout; it is a highway logistics truck, not a full-time four-wheel-drive off-roader. Combining Mitsubishi-derived agility with a tough, load-focused chassis, the CA1121J carved out a reputation for dependable service. To cope with the extreme conditions of China’s northwest, FAW even produced a specially reinforced batch that became known as the “Northwest King.”
For this release, Xcartoys has dressed the CA1121J in a disaster-relief theme. The body wears military green with a matching canvas soft-top, and the nose carries the FAW Jiefang emblem. The headlamps and marker lights are rendered as translucent plastic inserts, while the suspension is designed to pose convincingly on uneven terrain. Decals reading “The PLA is here!”, “United we stand — disaster relief, protecting our homes, weathering the storm together” and “Disaster is the order; rescue is the duty” adorn the cab front and both sides of the canopy. The real draw, though, is the set of 1/64-scale PLA soldier figurines in orange life vests — some hoisting sandbags onto their shoulders to shore up embankments, others wheeling barrows of bricks toward the front line for reinforcement work. Fair warning: with trucks like these, you’re never going to stop at just one.
