POP RACE Nissan Skyline GT-R BNR32

Godzilla Recharged – POP RACE Nissan Skyline GT-R BNR32

At the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, Nissan unveiled a groundbreaking electric reinterpretation of its iconic “Godzilla” – the Skyline GT-R R32 EV concept. This ambitious project, led by veteran Nissan EV engineer Ryozo Hirako and developed over 18 months, reimagines the legendary R32 GT-R with cutting-edge electric propulsion while preserving its mechanical soul.

Technical Evolution
The R32 EV swaps its original RB26DETT twin-turbo inline-six for dual 160kW electric motors (combined torque: 680 Nm), paired with a 62kWh battery from the LEAF NISMO RC02. Despite a 370kg weight increase (total 1,797kg), engineers maintained a torque-to-weight ratio comparable to the 1989 original. The all-wheel-drive system replaces mechanical ATTESA E-TS with electric torque vectoring, enabling millisecond-level power distribution. Classic design cues – from the boxy headlights to the signature rear spoiler – remain untouched, while the cabin merges retro-modern elements: custom Recaro bucket seats contrast with a digital dash that mimics analog gauges.

Nostalgia Engineered
To bridge the gap between eras, Nissan incorporated simulated gear shifts via paddle shifters and synthesized RB26 engine notes. The chassis upgrades include NISMO-tuned suspension, Öhlins dampers, and R35 GT-R Brembo brakes, blending vintage aesthetics with modern performance.

POP RACE’s Tribute
Meanwhile, POP RACE’s newly released BNR32 die-cast model celebrates the unmodified legend. The 1:64 scale replica faithfully recreates the RB26 engine bay with strut tower braces, retains the fuel-era trunk layout, and features functional doors, a matte silver-gray finish, and NISMO-branded five-spoke wheels. While currently combustion-engine faithful, the design leaves room for future EV variant releases.

Legacy in Transition
This electrified GT-R experiment poses a compelling question: Can the soul of “Godzilla” – forged in Group A racing dominance and 29 consecutive JTCC victories – transcend its combustion roots? By embedding EV tech within one of Japan’s most sacred automotive icons, Nissan challenges purists and innovators alike to redefine what makes a GT-R truly legendary. As the automotive world pivots to electrons over octane, this shockingly retro-futuristic creation may well chart a new course for heritage models in the electric age.
