Tomix 98136 JR Diesel Train Type H100 (Senmo Line/ Hanasaki Line)

Snow Country – Tomix 98136 JR Diesel Train Type H100 (Senmo Line / Hanasaki Line)
I have yet to visit snowy Hokkaido, but people often say its vast white landscapes are truly captivating. Imagining the H100 train running along the Senmo and Hanasaki lines through drifting snow makes me feel that I must experience it for myself one day.

The JR Hokkaido Type H100 Diesel Car (Senmo Line & Hanasaki Line wrapped version) is faithfully recreated in Tomix’s N scale 1:150 model set #98136, released in December 2024. The prototype is JR Hokkaido’s latest general-use diesel-electric railcar, the “H100 DECMO,” which entered service in 2020. This set features two cars, H100-82 (Senmo Line) and H100-83 (Hanasaki Line), each with regional-themed livery. The real trains are manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and operate as single-car DMUs, mainly serving the Nemuro Main Line, Senmo Line, and as extra trains during busy seasons.
The H100 series was developed to replace the aging and hard-to-maintain JNR KiHa 40 series. Based on the JR East GV-E400 design, it has been specially reinforced for Hokkaido’s harsh, snowy climate. The train uses a diesel-electric system, powered by a Komatsu inline six-cylinder diesel engine (SA6D140HE-3), delivering up to 331 kW (about 450 PS). The diesel engine drives a three-phase induction motor, giving a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Each car weighs about 42.7 tons and accommodates 99 passengers (36 seated). The stainless steel body is 20 meters long, 2.8 meters wide, and 3.6 meters high, with advanced VVVF inverter control and snow-resistant brakes.
The Senmo Line car’s livery highlights the Kushiro Marsh, Lake Mashu, drifting ice, and red-crowned cranes, while the Hanasaki Line car features hamanasu (rugosa rose) flowers and snowflakes—both celebrating Hokkaido’s natural beauty. Inside, the cars are also tailored for tourism, with removable tables made from Hokkaido wood, seat fabrics, and hand straps featuring local motifs, enhancing the passenger experience.
As a model, the Tomix 98136 set excellently reproduces the real train’s details, including authentic livery, green-tinted side windows, white LED headlights and taillights, and illuminated destination indicators. It also comes with changeable stickers, TN couplers (SP), flywheel drive, and the M-13 motor for smooth and realistic running. The set includes two cars, each reflecting the Senmo and Hanasaki themes.
Since entering service, the H100 series has significantly improved capacity and reliability on Hokkaido’s local lines. Its diesel-electric system reduces maintenance costs and boosts operational efficiency. While some passengers have noted the seats are a bit firm and seating limited, the train’s speed and comfort are clear advances over earlier models. As the H100 gradually replaces the old fleet, it marks a major step in modernizing Hokkaido’s railways and enhancing the region’s appeal for travelers.
