Toyota Crown Gen.14 (China)

Not All Crowns Are Created Equal – Xcartoys Toyota Crown Gen.14 (China)
Although both are labeled the fourteenth-generation Crown, the Chinese-market model arrived three years after its Japanese counterpart and differed in both appearance and dimensions. With German luxury brands gaining ground, production of the domestically built Crown ended in 2020, with total output reaching around 480,000 units.

Since the 1980s, the Crown has been synonymous with premium quality, comfort, and a stately image. Early imports—the seventh and eighth generations—were often used as government vehicles, cementing the Crown’s reputation for luxury and reliability. In 2005, the twelfth-generation Crown began local production in China, becoming a benchmark in the mid-to-large luxury sedan segment thanks to its authentic Japanese design, V6 rear-wheel-drive platform, excellent comfort, and rich features. However, the 2015 launch of the S210-generation Crown for China failed to recapture past glory.
Produced by FAW Toyota, the fourteenth-generation Crown in China was priced between RMB 250,800 and 332,800. Developed with the Chinese market in mind, Toyota’s team localized the design—making it longer and wider than the Japanese version, with a wheelbase stretched to 2,925 mm for enhanced rear-seat comfort. Power came from a 2.0-liter 8AR-FTS turbocharged inline-four, delivering 235 hp and 350 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in about 7.7 seconds and had a top speed of 235 km/h. The exterior featured a large chrome grille and sharp LED headlights and taillights, while the cabin was finished in premium leather, wood trim, and double-glazed windows for a truly luxurious feel. Despite strong initial interest, the overly localized design, lack of sporty Japanese elements, encroachment from German rivals like the Audi A6L and BMW 5 Series, and the rise of SUVs meant sales never matched its competitors, and the model was discontinued in 2020.
While it bears the Crown name, it simply isn’t the Japanese Crown most enthusiasts remember—so the emotional connection just isn’t the same. That said, Xcartoys has done an impressive job: the model’s long silhouette, detailed plastic lights front and rear, embossed undercarriage with exhaust details, and the Crown badge on the steering wheel all set a high standard for the industry. Still, if it’s not that Crown, it just isn’t that Crown.
