2026 (Tokyo Auto Salon 2026)

A Bountiful Haul – Tokyo Auto Salon 2026
Heading to the Tokyo Auto Salon to shop? Are you there to buy a car? No, it’s all about the merchandise. While my colleague will be covering the model cars, goods and accessories in a separate piece, my focus is on the real metal. With over 850 vehicles on display, it is impossible to cover every single one, so I have curated a selection of the absolute highlights.

A major focal point this year was the Toyota booth, which relocated to the North Hall. Toyota GAZOO Racing thrust their flagship supercar prototype, the GR GT, and the race-focused GR GT3 into the spotlight for the first time. They also showcased the GR Yaris MORIZO RR, a limited-run model (200 units) based on the GR Yaris. Meanwhile, Nissan presented the Aura NISMO RS Concept, offering a vision of “Urban Performance.” Through aggressive conceptual packaging, they are extending NISMO’s exploration into future production possibilities.

In the Honda camp, the ARTA racing team revealed the ARTA GT FL5 Special Edition. Limited to just 20 units globally with a price tag of 13.5 million yen, it boasts a power output boosted to 400ps, complemented by a full suite of upgrades including wide fenders, a rear wing, and specialized braking and suspension systems. Subaru brought the WRX STI Sport# PROTOTYPE, headlined by the triumphant return of the manual transmission.
On the styling front, Result Japan’s “Neo 86” body kit for the modern GR 86 paid a tasteful tribute to the legendary AE86. At the other end of the spectrum, the “Pocket Bunny” transformed a Suzuki Twin into a shrunken, caricature-proportioned R32 GT-R, proving that style itself is a form of performance.
In the world of heavy-duty tuning, HKS demonstrated the ultimate vision of performance with “THE HKS R35 GT-R DIMENSION Z.” Based on the GT-R NISMO (MY24), it features a 4.3L displacement upgrade and a new turbine setup. Their slogan, “Aiming for 1300 Horsepower,” was one of the show’s most thunderous declarations. Hyundai unveiled a concept based on the IONIQ 5, embedding speakers and equipment directly into the vehicle. Under the theme “Plug into Freedom,” they reimagined the EV as a mobile performance and creative studio. Daihatsu also premiered the “K-OPEN Running Proto 2,” focusing on radical lightweighting, a lower center of gravity, and optimized weight distribution to answer the core tuning philosophy that “small cars can still be hot.”
The three-day event attracted a staggering 273,000 visitors. Beyond the indoor exhibits, the event featured outdoor driving demonstrations, adjacent concerts, and a series of activities, creating a comprehensive stage blending “Tuning + Racing + Lifestyle.”
The biggest difference compared to last year was the strategy of model car brands. Instead of a centralized area, they “dispersed” into the booths of famous tuners like Top Secret, Liberty Walk, and RE Amemiya. This caused the crowds of model collectors to overlap with those wanting to see the real cars, resulting in aisles packed shoulder-to-shoulder during peak hours—noticeably more intense than last year. With exhibitors offering more merchandise than ever, and the ubiquity of large shopping bags (especially from brands like Liberty Walk that sell both models and apparel), it seemed nearly everyone left the venue fully loaded.
