Following the highly successful 1995 season, teams like Ferrari and Porsche introduced new or upgraded cars to challenge the McLaren F1 GTR. In response, the Woking-based manufacturer unveiled the 1996 F1 GTR in November 1995, which is the model replicated by MINI GT.

The F1 GTR 96 was McLaren’s adaptation to meet Le Mans specifications for road versions. Priced at £680,000 at launch, McLaren produced one prototype and five customer cars. It featured a 6.1-liter BMW V12 naturally aspirated engine, outputting 600 horsepower. The weight was reduced from 1,050 kg to 1,012 kg, and the engine and six-speed manual gearbox were lowered by 50mm. Aerodynamic enhancements were also implemented. The interior boasted a digital dashboard and carbon fiber control panels. In the 1996 season, the F1 GTR secured 7 victories in the BPR GT Championship, ultimately clinching both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles.

The MINI GT McLaren F1 GTR 1996 Presentation model is distinguished by its red body with striking yellow “GTR” lettering spanning from the front to the rear on both sides. Additional “96 GTR” markings on the roof intake and “GTR” on the rear wing, combined with yellow star-shaped wheels, make for a memorable, if divisive, design. While thinner wheel replicas would be preferable, the 1/64 scale imposes certain physical limitations. The headlight covers are made of transparent plastic, and the taillights are separate components. For enhanced realism, painting the air intakes black might improve the overall visual effect.
