Model 1 Mitsubishi Fuso The Great

Police Story 2 – Model 1 Mitsubishi Fuso The Great

In the opening sequence of 1988’s Police Story 2, Jackie Chan’s character Ka-Kui is demoted to traffic patrol after the property damage caused in the first film. He stops a convoy of yellow Mitsubishi Fuso trucks on the highway, with the Mitsubishi logo appearing repeatedly throughout the scene—an early example of product placement in Hong Kong cinema. While not as iconic as the first film’s bus chase, the image of neatly aligned trucks and Chan’s traffic-stopping gestures became a distinctive element of Hong Kong action cinema.

Model 1 Mitsubishi Fuso The Great

Model 1’s 1:64 Mitsubishi Fuso The Great 1986 edition taps directly into this collective memory. The Mitsubishi Fuso The Great debuted in 1983, with its first minor facelift arriving in 1986, available in both round-headlight and square-headlight configurations. Model 1 has released three versions: white round-headlight (T66301), yellow square-headlight (T66302), and orange 1993 edition (T66303). The actual truck featured a 6D22 inline-six turbocharged engine with 11,149cc displacement, producing 225 to 310 horsepower. It was replaced by the Super Great in 1996 and discontinued in 2001.

It’s surprising to see a second Hong Kong brand besides Kidult n Kiddo venture into 1:64 scale trucks. Despite the affordable price point, the attention to detail is commendable: plastic headlights and taillights, chrome-plated fuel tank, side mirrors, tiltable cab, Japanese-style fifth wheel coupling, side exhaust pipes, and detailed undercarriage structure. Online discussions note that Hong Kong trucks of that era typically had ten-lug wheels rather than the Japanese eight-lug configuration, but this minor discrepancy doesn’t diminish the model’s appeal. After all, trucks occupy a more niche market than passenger cars—here’s hoping this segment continues to grow.
